Go beyond examinations, Minister tells academics

The Minister said higher education meant translating whatever knowledge one had acquired to generate new ideas and conduct research. The government has instituted Kairali awards to promote research, Minister for Education C. Ravindranath has said. Higher education did not mean graduation or postgraduation alone. As many as seven universities and 35 government arts and science colleges are part of Sasthrayaan. Only if science developed and was linked to the production sector would areas such as agriculture would progress.

He was speaking at the State-level launch of Sasthrayaan, a project of the State Higher Education Department and Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA)-Kerala State Project Directorate, to transform colleges and universities into centres of excellence, at Government College for Women here on Thursday. The Minister said higher education meant translating whatever knowledge one had acquired to generate new ideas and conduct research. Higher education did not mean graduation or postgraduation alone. There was need to generate ideas beyond these, investigate them, and research them so as to posit them as ideas of the entire society for achieving progress. Only if science developed and was linked to the production sector would areas such as agriculture would progress. Efforts to link Sasthrayaan with the production sector would be made, Mr. Ravindranath said. The Kairali awards would be given in three categories — students who conduct the best research in eight sectors, guides who promote research though their publications, and finally, to a Malayali among those the world over for their contribution to research. V.S. Sivakumar, MLA, presided over the function. Collegiate Education Department Director M.S. Jaya and RUSA nodal officer U.C. Biveesh were present. As many as 24 exhibitions have been arranged at the college as part of Sasthrayaan. As many as seven universities and 35 government arts and science colleges are part of Sasthrayaan.
