more-in The Thiruvananthapuram division of the Southern Railway is a passenger-oriented division, which strives to maintain punctuality and provide passenger comfort, Prakash Butani, Divisional Railway Manager, Thiruvananthapuram, has said. He was inaugurating the 63rd Railway Week celebrations here on Friday. “We have a difficult terrain with 25% of our track passing via curves and over 2,500 minor and major bridges. In spite of all odds, we have renewed tracks on 83 km, which is an all-time high,” he said. The division witnessed a growth of 9% in overall earnings when compared to last year. An increase of 26% was seen in freight carried in terms of tonnage and the goods earnings increased by 32%. Mr. Butani added that several passenger amenity works were also undertaken during the year. Eight escalators were commissioned, pushing the total number to 25. Four lifts were commissioned and six more will be provided this year. Free WiFi services were provided at three railway stations, taking the total to seven. Paid air-conditioned waiting halls were opened in association with the Kudumbasree Mission at two stations and water vending machines were set up at eight stations.
