Heavy showers in Kerala till Thursday

Kerala witnessed heavy rain due to the presence of an offshore trough from Maharashtra coast to Kerala coast. Heavy rain in nearby hilly districts is causing flood in Pamba and Achencoil rivers, affecting water transport. Over the past 24 hours, heavy rain was recorded in Idukki (51.38mm), Thodupuzha (53.3mm), Devikulam (68.2mm), Idukki (56.8mm), Peermade (44mm) and Udumbanchola (34.6mm). THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After a brief lull, monsoon intensified over Kerala with India Meteorological department (IMD) forecasting heavy rain in all districts till Thursday, except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, where moderate rainfall is expected.Two women were killed and 11 others injured in Alappuzha, Kannur and Kozhikode in separate incidents. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After a brief lull, monsoon intensified over Kerala with India Meteorological department (IMD) forecasting heavy rain in all districts till Thursday, except Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, where moderate rainfall is expected.Two women were killed and 11 others injured in Alappuzha, Kannur and Kozhikode in separate incidents. Subhadra (62) from the Fishermen Colony at Thycattusserry was electrocuted while Sithara C from Aryaparambu, near Peravoor died after a tree fell on an auto. Fortysix families sought refuge in five relief camps in Alappuzha while 100 residents are already residing at camps in Kozhikode to escape rain fury.The district collectors of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam and Thrissur have declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Monday. The excess rainfall this monsoon is pegged at 11% and IMD has warned fishermen to stay ashore.Thiruvananthapuram collector K Vasuki and Kollam collector S Karthikeyan have announced compensatory working day on Saturday. University examinations will be held as scheduled. Only, Kerala University has postponed its examination from Tuesday to Saturday.As rain intensified, the disaster management authority have issued landslides, flooding and soil erosion alerts. People have been warned against entering waterbodies and visiting landslide-prone areas. IMD’s daily weather report said heavy rain was reported in Vaikom (13cm), Kayamkulam (10cm), Piravom (9cm), Kottayam, Kayamkulam and Munnar (7cm each) on Sunday.Meanwhile heavy rain, whirlwind and sea erosion left a trail of destruction in Kozhikode. One house was fully damaged and five others partially damaged following sea erosion at Butt Road Beach and Puthiyappa. Crop loss was reported from Vadakara and Thamarassery taluks.A giant tree fell on NH66 at Puthiyangadi on Sunday morning and traffic was disrupted on the route for six hours. Another tree fell on four shops near NGO quarters disrupting vehicular movement on NH766. A family had a narrow escape in Beypore after they fled when a tree was about to fall on their home.In Alappuzha, one house was fully damaged and 76 others were partially destroyed due to inclement weather. The total loss was estimated at Rs 14.39 lakh. Many parts of the district recorded over 50mm of rain on Sunday. Though district administration had asked all schools, which got a holiday on July 11 in Cherthala, Ambalappuzha and Kuttanad taluks on account of heavy rain, to add a working day on July 21, it has been changed to July 28. Monday’s holiday will be compensated with a working day on August 4.Low-lying areas and many roads (including AC Road) are inundated. Power supply in several areas has not been restored.In Idukki, landslides were reported in various parts of the district. Traffic was disrupted on Kochi-Dhanushkodi highway at RO Kavala and Post Office Kavala in Munnar. Over the past 24 hours, heavy rain was recorded in Idukki (51.38mm), Thodupuzha (53.3mm), Devikulam (68.2mm), Idukki (56.8mm), Peermade (44mm) and Udumbanchola (34.6mm).
