KOCHI: The Indian Navy selected two localities in Ernakulam district for carrying out their rehabilitation initiatives. The Navy will execute reconstruction works at Muttinakam in Varapuzha panchayat and Cheriya Kadamakudi in Kadamakudi panchayat.After visiting a totally damaged house on Wednesday morning chairman chiefs of staff committee (COSC) and chief of the naval staff (CNS) admiral Sunil Lanba said the areas for rehabilitation and reconstruction works were chose based on inputs received from the local administration and visits by naval official.Lanba said activities planned at Muttinakam include reconstruction of a completely damaged house on the river bank. The Navy will undertake complete renovation of a sub primary health centre (PHC) and anganwadi along with furniture and all essential equipment. At Cheriya Kadamakudi they will reconstruct three houses, roofs of five houses will be renewed, construction of an aganwadi, fitment of 10 tonnes per day reverse osmosis (RO) plant. Meanwhile, Navy pointed that the RO plant has been completed and has been in operation since August 28, 2018.An Indian Coast Guard chopper during the rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected areas of ErnakulamRehabilitation kits containing essential commodities such as clothing, cleaning gear and utensils and the like were also distributed on Wednesday. They provided 800 such kits for Muttinakam and 500 kits for Cheriya kadmakkudi. The admiral reviewed relief and rehabilitation work in this locality which was ravaged during the recent Kerala floods Admiral Lanba said he will meet chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday and handover a cheque of Rs 8.9 crore to the chief minister’s distress relief fund. The amount is a voluntary contribution from the salaries of naval personnel. He said he will discuss on matters regarding further support required from the Navy to overcome the situation.He said he “has been closely monitoring the situation over these past several days and that the Navy had deployed its personnel and assets from across the Navy during the crisis and that the focus now is on relief activities.” Lanba also said that there were some additional requirements including construction of a bridge connecting Pizhala island to Cheriya Kadamakudi hamlet has come up. He said the project involves huge amount of money. However, “This would also be considered, and the feasibility will be explored,” he added.The CNS was accompanied by vice admiral flag officer commanding-in-chief, southern naval command AK Chawla. Admiral Lanba also interacted with MLAs VD Satheesan, S Sharma, district collector Mohammed Y Safirullah and members of the local bodies in the region. The Navy Wives Welfare Association handed over relief materials worth Rs 25 lakh to local body officials.
