LDF romps home in polls to Corpn panels

Elections to three standing committee chairperson posts at the city Corporation on Tuesday did not throw up any surprises, with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) winning the posts comfortably. Ms. Pushpalatha had served as Health standing committee chairperson during the previous council’s tenure. Nedumcaud ward councillor S. Pushpalatha of the CPI(M) will be the chairperson of the Public Works standing committee. Medical College ward councillor S.S. Sindhu will be chairperson of the Welfare standing committee. Chellamangalam ward councillor C. Sudarshanan of the CPI(M) will be the chairperson of the Education and Sports standing committee.

The results were a forgone conclusion as the United Democratic Front (UDF) had fielded candidates after initial reluctance. Nedumcaud ward councillor S. Pushpalatha of the CPI(M) will be the chairperson of the Public Works standing committee. She won all the six votes of the CPI(M) members on the panel, while the BJP candidate Hima Saji got 4 votes and UDF’s C. Omana two votes. Ms. Pushpalatha had served as Health standing committee chairperson during the previous council’s tenure. Chellamangalam ward councillor C. Sudarshanan of the CPI(M) will be the chairperson of the Education and Sports standing committee. He polled 6 votes while the BJP’s Karamana Ajith got 4 and UDF’s S.Bindu two. Medical College ward councillor S.S. Sindhu will be chairperson of the Welfare standing committee. She got 7 votes, while BJP candidate Remya Ramesh got 4 votes and UDF's R.S. Maya got 2 votes. Sitting chairpersons R. Geetha Gopal of the Welfare standing committee, S. Unnikrishnan of Education standing committee, and Safeera Begum of Public Works committee were asked to quit earlier this month by the CPI(M) as part of a periodic performance review. The review has not gone down well among the councillors.
