Thiruvananthapuram: The city corporation has proposed collection of 20% of ticket rate as service charge for the upcoming one-day international cricket match to be held at Kariavattom on November 1.The corporation had raised the demand for service charge during the meeting held last week to assess the preparations ahead of cricket match. The revenue wing in its report had mooted the charges to meet the expense required for carrying out cleaning exercise and for providing other essential services at the stadium. The civic body has now demanded service charge from ticket sale as the earlier practice of collecting 30% of each ticket sale proceeds during events and exhibitions was stopped with the introduction of GST.The civic has pitched for service charges at a rate of 20% considering the enormous financial strain it had suffered during the previous match held in November 2017.In a cleaning mission that spanned for two days following the first international T-20 in the city, corporation workers had collected 15 barrels of food waste weighing close to 1.5 tonnes.Fifty staff monitored by corporation’s health wing had worked continuoúsly for two days and segregated each kind of waste depending upon their nature.Plastic waste alone accounted for 500kg and paper waste was estimated at 1,500kg. Pepsico, which had entered into an agreement with corporation for implementing extended producer responsibility, collected 35,000 pet bottles from the venue. Around 60,000 pet bottles were unloaded at the venue of which 25,000 were taken back unsold. A total of 25,000 eco-friendly plates were collected from the venue. Around 10,000 aluminium foils and 1,000 cans were also recovered from the venue.According to officials, corporation was paid only around Rs 1.5 lakh following the match in November. Mayor V K Prasanth said that the civic body has proposed service charges considering the extent of work involved.“Cleaning will have to be done during the match and also after the match. We are planning to deploy staff in two shifts. We will have to shell out a large sum for transportation, payment of wages and the like,” said Prasanth. The proposal has been submitted to Kerala Cricket Association. The revenue wing said that no response has been received from the association so far. The officials, however, said that chances are high that a portion of match revenue might be contributed to relief fund. Also, restrictions in handling of accounts imposed by Supreme Court appointed committee of administrators might not give BCCI a free hand in determining payment of money to city corporation. The city corporation will also introduce licence fee for vendors who set up temporary stalls at the venue. They will be supposed to work under green protocol. KCA and corporation have decided to minimize generation of non-biodegradable waste in the venue. It has been agreed that reusable plates and nature-friendly disposable plates may be used in the venue as part of green protocol. The producers of water bottles may have to comply with extended producer responsibility and after use, bottles shall be collected and handed over for recycling.
