Septage guidelines in place

The city Corporation has approved guidelines for the scientific handling of septage waste generated in the city. The local body plans to put an end to the practice of dumping of collected septage waste in public places and in waterbodies. The user fee for septage colleection can be remitted online so that there is no need for any monetary transactions between the licensees and users. Once a user logs a request for septage collection, it will be allocated a vehicle based on GPS location and the job priority. The Corporation and the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) will run septage receiving stations for treatment of the collected waste.

The working of private vehicles that collect such waste will also be regulated. The Corporation and the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) will run septage receiving stations for treatment of the collected waste. Only vehicles licensed by the Corporation will be allowed to collect waste. The vehicles will be colour coded in brown. They will be tracked using a GPS system. The user fee for septage colleection can be remitted online so that there is no need for any monetary transactions between the licensees and users. Once a user logs a request for septage collection, it will be allocated a vehicle based on GPS location and the job priority. The requests can be logged through Akshaya centres too. A call centre will function to monitor the collection activities and to receive complaints from the public. It will also allocate the collection job based on priority. User fee The user fee for vehicles with tank capacity up to 5,000 litres is ?3000, while the fee for those between 5,001 to 7,500 litres is ?4,000. The fee for vehicles above 7,500-litre capacity is ?6,000. The annual licence fee for vehicles with tank capacity of up to 5,000 litres is ?2,500 while those between 5,001 to 7,500 litres is ?3,500. Vehicles above 7,500-litre capacity will have to pay a licence fee of ?5,000. Recently, the health officials of the local body has been conducting an intense ground-level survey on the sources of septage and other waste, which are polluting the waterbodies within the Corporation area. A large number of families living along the rivers and canals have been found to be releasing faecal waste into the waterbodies.
