Niramaya scheme a big hit in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has topped the country in enrolling maximum number of beneficiaries in the Niramaya insurance scheme of National Trust under the Union ministry of social justice. The beneficiaries from Kerala, so far, have drawn a total of around Rs 70 lakh as medical claim from National Trust, the release said. "Kerala could make this achievement, thanks to strong interventions from the state government and the social justice department," said health and social justice minister K K Shailaja in the statement. Out of the total 82,000 beneficiaries of the scheme (being implemented with the state government's funding) in the country, 39% are from Kerala, she pointed out.As of now, there are local committees in all 14 districts with the respective district collector as the chairman and a state nodal agency centre to coordinate the National Trust activities. The scheme is meant for the welfare of disabled people.It covers people with autism cerebral palsy and other mental and physical challenges.The state also turned out to be the one which appointed maximum number of 'legal guardians' under the scheme.Number of beneficiaries under the scheme touched 33,000 in Kerala, while the state went far ahead by appointing 4,000 legal guardians, which was more than double the total figure in the rest of the country, said an official statement.
