Irked by Kerala government's 'indifference', UDF decides to intensify stir

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the state government failing to respond to the ongoing dharna organized by UDF MLAs, the UDF has decided to intensify its protest over the Sabarimala issue inside the assembly from Monday.Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala had urged the speaker twice to intervene in the issue. However, the meeting was called off in the last minute.Chennithala had requested the speaker to settle the issue by Friday as there are no assembly sittings on Saturday and Sunday. In the past, such issues were settled before the House adjourned on Friday.With the government not coming forward for talks, MLAs V S Sivakumar, Parakkal Abdullah and N Jayaraj are continuing with indefinite dharna-seeking the withdrawal of prohibitory order imposed at Sabarimala- before the House. Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan had assured of settling the dharna through a discussion with the state government last Friday.Industries minister E P Jayarajan had also said in the assembly last Friday that the government was ready for talks and the discussion would take place in the speaker's chamber. This has now irked the UDF.Sources said that government had backtracked from the discussion on Friday since the CM was not interested in ending the dharna.It is learnt that the UDF will raise the issue as soon as the House assembles on Monday, and is likely to disrupt the proceedings until the government holds a discussion to amicably settle the issue.
