THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Poonthura police arrested two women hailing from Chennai in Tamil Nadu on charges of snatching a gold chain worn by an old woman. The crime took place during a temple procession. The police identified the women as Archana (34) and Latha (35). The complainant in the case is Vijayamma of Panathura.The police said that the two women were suspected to be members of a gang that had arrived in the city to bank on the temple festival season. The alleged crime took place during the ‘Kaavadi’ procession held as part of the annual festival at Lord Subrahmaniya Temple at Panathura, near Ambalathara on Monday.According to the complaint, the two women joined the procession that was going from Ambalathara to Panathura and got acquainted with Vijayamma, who was also part of the procession. They gained her trust before snatching the chain weighing 1.75 sovereigns. Vijayamma reported the matter to the police. The police launched an inquiry based on the description of the women Vijayamma gave them and managed to track them down and arrest them.The police also said that more members of the gang could still be staying back in the city.
