Green protocol brings down waste generation during Pongala to 65 tons

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city corporation brought down waste generation during Pongala from 72 tons to 65 tons owing to strict implementation of green protocol. "In 2018, we could easily bring down waste generation from 300 tons to 72 tons after pongala due to implementation of green protocol. The officials said that imposing green protocol could considerably reduce total waste generation. 113 organisations had registered for food and water distribution during Pongala.Corporation workers swung into action soon after the sprinkling of holy water on Pongala day and spread out in various stretches for post pongala cleaning. This year the waste generation is estimated to have come down to 65 tons.

The officials said that imposing green protocol could considerably reduce total waste generation."In 2018, we could easily bring down waste generation from 300 tons to 72 tons after pongala due to implementation of green protocol. This year the waste generation is estimated to have come down to 65 tons. The left overs in main stretches were very less compared to previous years," an official said.Mayor VK Prasanth had directed officials to initiate legal action against those who violate Green protocol during Attukal pongala. The corporation had distributed steel glasses and plates for voluntary organisations distributing food and water during pongala. 113 organisations had registered for food and water distribution during Pongala.Corporation workers swung into action soon after the sprinkling of holy water on Pongala day and spread out in various stretches for post pongala cleaning. 35 giant earth mover, 10 small earth movers, 12 corporation trucks, 25 pick-up autos, 3 earth movers and 2 sucking machines were used for post Pongala cleaning.Three septage sucking machines were also used for cleaning public toilets.1133 cleaning staff along with 2250 additional staff were deployed by city corporation for post Pongala cleaning. By night the cleaning process reached the final phase and artificial rain was used to wash the streets clean.
