National folk festival to kick off on Sunday

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala state youth welfare board will organize the third edition of the National Folk Festival of Kerala on Tagore Theatre premises from Sunday.The three-day event aims for cultural exchange. It will showcase art forms of various states. The performance of Barmer Boys, a musical group from Rajasthan and folk art performances by groups from the northeast states will be the highlight of this edition.A temporary stage will be constructed on Tagore theatre premises where the events will be held.“The festival, which was conducted for five days in the previous editions, is being conducted in three days to save expenses as the state is recuperating after the August flood,” said P Biju, vice-chairman of youth welfare board.Artforms from New Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Karnataka and Kerala will be staged at the festival. Performance by folk artists from Kathputli Colony in Delhi and senior folk artist Mansur Fakir Purulia Chhau from Bengal and Odisha, Dollu Kunitha from Karnataka and Dandiya Raas from Gujarat will be the other highlights of the event.The festival will pay tribute to late director Lenin Rajendran by staging the drama ‘Poothapattu’, which was directed by him.Performance of Babu Shankar, street singer from Kozhikode; a drama connecting art forms and football by Little Earth School of Theatre, Malappuram; and ‘Kerala grameena kazhichakal’ for students to understand the culture and traditions of the state will be arranged at the festival.The performance of Thirayattam, an art form from north Kerala on Tuesday, will mark the conclusion of the festival.
