Fire incidents continue in the city

Thiruvananthapuram: Fire outbreaks continue in the city and two cases were reported on Monday – one from a lodge at Medical College and another from a house at Muttada.The fire station at Chenkalchoola received a fire alert from B G Continental Tourist Home, Medical College on Monday morning after the storeroom on the top floor of the building which where coir mattresses, bedsheets and pillows were kept.Tourist Home staff Prakash M said that the presence of fire combatants in the building and the quick response from fire service personnel ensured that the fire did not spread outside the storeroom. “Apart from stocked mattresses, we have not sustained much damage. The fire broke out around 9:30am and it was quickly brought under control,” he said.Ratheesh V, who runs a bakery opposite the tourist home, was one of the first to reach the spot after residents alerted him. “Mayor V K Prasanth who was passing this way stopped and the police officers who were accompanying him helped control the traffic,” he said.According to Chenaklchola station officer D Praveen who led the rescue efforts, the cause of the fire is unknown as of now. “There was only one light bulb inside the room and from initial enquiry, a short circuit is highly unlikely. We don’t know if someone had dropped a burning cigarette butt inside the room,” he said.In the second instance, the fire broke out in a house at Muttada, which caused estimated damage of around Rs 4 lakh. The house belongs to one Anoop, who works in the construction field. Several documents, a lap top, a computer and its accessories and air conditioner were gutted. “It took about 10-15 mins to douse the fire,” said Chenkalchoola fire station officer Ashok Kumar C.In two other minor incidents, a garbage pile in Oruvathilkota and an abandoned plot in Aryanadu, Kanjiramood also caught fire on Monday, but they were doused immediately before causing any damage.
