THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Senior Congress leaders have come out against the allegation of CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan that the Congress is in a tacit understanding with BJP for a quid pro quo deal in this Lok Sabha poll. KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran, opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala and former CM Oommen Chandy termed the allegation baseless and stemmed from CPM’s fear of defeat.“It was the CPM which had engaged with Sangh Parivar forces on several occasions. They did it in 1977 when elections were held after the Emergency. At that time the front led by Congress and comprising CPI had a thumping win. In 1989, BJP and Left parties together supported V P Singh government. They met every week to discuss the policies of the government. In 2007, the BJP and Left voted together against UPA government in parliament,” Chandy told a news conference here. He said the CPM doesn’t want to discuss the failure of state government or politics of violence.Ramachandran said the allegation of Congress-League-BJP alliance was the last weapon in CPM’s armoury. “The CPM is shocked by the list of candidates we have announced. They have mentioned five seats and the UDF will win all of them,” the KPCC chief said. He said the real understanding was between CPM and BJP. “The dilly-dallying of CBI in the SNC-Lavalin case is a clear proof. Despite the judges’ demand, the CBI was unwilling to argue the case. They didn’t implement the order to arrest SNC-Lavalin vice-president even six years after court ordering the same,” he said.
