Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala water authority ( KWA ) is mulling a proposal to lay pipes to bring water from Peppara dam to Aruvikkara . Water level at Peppara is depleting after the onset of summer. At present the water level is 103 metres.Though KWA is hopeful to ensure supply till June, loss of water through evaporation is a major concern. In addition to loss due to evaporation, KWA is also concerned about the loss during transmission from Peppara to Arvikkara, where water flows freely through the entire 29 km.If KWA lays pipes in the entire stretch, it could help to reduce loss due to seepage and evaporation.“Pipe of minimum 1 metre diameter should be laid from Peppara to Aruvikkara to bring water,” KWA officials said.Sources in KWA said that the proposal was in active discussion as it could save a lot of water.Currently, Peppara is the lone source of drinking water for the city. KWA has also initiated a new scheme to draw water from Neyyar.KWA is also gearing up to get consent to raise water level of Peppara dam before monsoon. KWA officials said that the water level should be raised to maximum to ensure supply for more projects.Currently, the maximum level is 107.5 metres and shutters are placed at that level. KWA has completed survey for the online application to request Union ministry of forest and environment to raise the water level to the full reservoir level, which is 110.5 metres.“The online application will be submitted soon. If we get sanction to raise water level without much delay, we will be able to utilize the rainfall this monsoon season,” said a KWA official. If water level at Peppara is raised to full reservoir level, KWA could ensure water supply without any struggle. Now, KWA officials hope that water will be enough till monsoon rains hit the state, which is expected by end of May or first week of June.
