Thiruvananthapuram: Age doesnt matter, as long as you are above 55. Task is flexible, and so is the timing. Here is a chance to get back to the campus. The department of computational biology and bioinformatics (DCB) of Kerala University is inviting applications for senior internship. There are quite a few perks as the application notification suggests. Relive the college days, immerse in the green environs of the campus, learn a few tricks and contribute to the daily chores. The inspiration for launching a senior internship is quite personal for Achuth Sankar S Nair, professor and head of the DCB. The 2015 film The Intern, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers, which features a 70-year-old retired, intelligent widower (Robert De Niro) grabbing a chance to be a senior intern at an online clothes retailing firm run by a career-oriented woman (Anne Hathaway) provided the spark. It was such a beautiful film. The internship idea was inspired by that film, Achuth Sankar said. There was also an incident which prompted him to go for a senior internship programme. The campus had hosted a get together of alumni of another department. They happened to turn up at the DCB and they were impressed by the novel initiatives and the positive vibes. One of them asked if they could ever return to the campus. That kept me thinking. They can create values here, interact with the younger generation, share life experiences and students would be more open to them than their teachers, Achuth Sankar added. As part of the programme, the department plans to engage them with small tasks like letter drafting as well as learning programming and machine learning. Trichemie Plant Engineering Solutions (TPES), a startup from Pune, has launched a back-to-core engineering campaign to attract students. Sectors with heavy investment in new manufacturing facilities, such as chemicals and semiconductor chip manufacturing, are particularly affected. Students are encouraged to consider the long-term lucrative careers available in core engineering.
