Free medicine scheme: 600 counters to come up

JAIPUR: Six hundred new drug distribution counters (DDC) are coming up to give boost to chief minister free medicine scheme in the state.While presenting vote on account on Wednesday, chief minister Ashok Gehlot announced that free medicine scheme will be strengthened in the state, which was launched in the state in 2011.The health department is conducting a survey in the state to find out the requirement of new DDC by analysing the patients foot fall in the hospitals and other government-run clinical establishments. Gehlot said, institute associated with Jodhpur medical college will be developed as high level research institute for infectious diseases.With the state witnessing frequent outbreak of swine flu, the research institute for infectious disease will help in finding out the causes of its frequent outbreaks and also suggest measures to prevent such outbreak of infectious diseases. Patients get free medicines from DDC set up on the premises of the government-run hospitals.Not only the DDCs network will be expanded but also the number of medicines will be increased in numbers, which will be made available at the DDCs.Gehlot said that new medicines will be included in chief minister free medicine scheme for cancer, heart, respiratory diseases and liver related ailments.The health department is analysing the requirement of new drugs which are required for the treatment of cancer, heart, respiratory disease and liver related disorders.Focusing on ensuring availability of food items in markets with any adulteration and to keep a check on sale of sub-standard food items, the state government will strengthen its food testing facilities.Gehlot said that government drug testing laboratories at Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Bikaner will be strengthened and made functional soon.With infectious disease such as swine flu is taking toll on the health of the people in the state, the state government has decided to set up a research institute.
