It's Raining Woes for 1 lakh Covid Patients

At least 17 Covid-19 patients on ventilator support at Porbandar Civil Hospital’s ICU were shifted to facilities in Junagadh and Jamnagar on Monday as a precautionary measure. Incharge civil surgeon Dr Alka Lakhani said the step was taken as the ceiling of the ICU is in a dilapidated condition and may fall due to the adverse weather.

It was a double whammy for nearly 1 lakh active Covid-19 cases in the state as Tauktae threatened to cause major disruptions in communications and power supply and to damage infrastructure.

All through Monday, Covid patients on oxygen support and critically ill patients on ventilators in smaller centres were shifted to bigger hospitals in districts that are less likely to be impacted by Tauktae.

In the Union Territory of Diu, the administration installed a 250KV power generator at Civil Hospital in case the permanently installed generator fails, Diu health secretary A Muthamma said. Of the 177 patients, 60 are on oxygen support.

In Ahmedabad, 50-odd patients were transferred from small hospitals to Civil Hospital.

In Vadodara,145 patients admitted at BAPS Yagnapurush Sabhagruh makeshift Covid-19 hospital were transferred to GMERS Medical College and Hospital, Gotri, and Samras hostel.

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said all1,400 Covid-19 hospitals in the state, including private ones, have already been instructed to keep an extra power generator set and sufficient stock of diesel to deal with any emergency situation.
“Instructions have been given to keep174 ICU ambulances on standby to shift critical patients if the need arises,” the CM said. “As a precautionary measure, we have already sent three days’ stock of remdesivir injections to the hospitals.”

In the Khambhalia Civil Hospital of Devbhoomi Dwarka district, where120 Covid-19 patients are on oxygen support, two extra diesel generator sets were installed.
In Bhavnagar, all 35 private Covid-19 hospitals have already been instructed to install generators to run ventilators and other medical devices in case of power failure.

At the Jamnagar Civil Hospital, about 45 Covid-19 patients from eighth and ninth floors were shifted to lower floors.
