After the second wave of covid that took place in the country, people have gravitated to the dependence on oxygen and its importance.

The pandemic-induced oxygen shortage in the state has brought about an increased interest in canned oxygen across local supermarkets and drug stores. Several private supermarkets across Vijayawada have stocked up on canned oxygen as the product neither requires a prescription nor a license.

Explaining the increased interest, Baila Mahesh, a manager at a supermarket in Poranki, said, “The reasons include both precautionary measures and the desperation due to the shortage of oxygen beds. We procured them in the latter half of May and around Rs 11,000 worth of can have already been sold.”

The cost of a 12-liter can of oxygen ranges between Rs 500 and Rs 600 and can provide a maximum of 350 inhalations. On average, a human being takes 12–20 inhalations per minute, and going by a conservative estimate, oxygen can last around 20 minutes.

Pulmonologists say that these spray cans do not serve the purpose that Covid patients would hope for as their primary purpose is to help professional athletes and mountaineers.

“For Covid patients suffering from critical loss of oxygen in their bloodstream, it (oxygen can) can be a lifesaver till they reach a hospital. However, it cannot be a sustainable home remedy for Covid-19,” Dr Ashwin Kumar, a Vijayawada-based pulmonologist told.

Two months ago, even drug stores in Vijayawada did not bother stocking up oxygen cans.

They were mostly available on e-commerce platforms. But now, several stores and even supermarkets have stocked up on these cans considering consumer mindset.

Doctors say that canned oxygen usually claims to contain 95% oxygen and even comes in flavors, however, they are not meant for medical and industrial use. The sale of oxygen cans has dropped now as the state’s oxygen crisis has been resolved.
