AP's SSC and Inter exams cancelled

The AP government on Thursday cancelled SSC and intermediate examinations.

After the Supreme Court directed the state government to complete the entire process of examinations, including declaration of results, by July 31, the Education minister Adimulapu Suresh made the announcement on Thursday to cancel SSC and intermediate examinations.

Officials of the Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) told the government they cannot conduct the examinations in the stipulated time frame as ordered by the apex court.

“We were keen to conduct the exams as second year intermediate marks play a key role in the future of students. We have submitted an affidavit to the Centre explaining the safety measures that would be taken for the safe conduct of the exams. But the Supreme Court has ordered the entire process to end by July 31. We are not in a position to conduct the exams in such a short time,” Suresh said, adding that the government will constitute an expert panel to take a decision on awarding marks to students.

“SSC students would be promoted as per their performance from class 7 to class 9,” the minister said.

The Supreme Court , earlier on Thursday, had directed AP government to formulate their scheme for internal assessment of students within 10 days and declare the results by the end of July. The bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari approved the decision taken by other states and questioned the AP government for insisting on conducting the examinations.

The bench was not satisfied with the response of advocate Mahfooz A Nazki, who stated that only 15-18 students would be allowed to sit in an examination hall .

While posting the case for Friday, the bench had made it clear to the state that it would pass order to scrap the proposed exam if it was not satisfied with its response.

The court also said that the state will be held responsible in case of any fatality of students if it decided to conduct the exam.

It said going by the compensation amount paid by some state governments, the AP government may also have to pay compensation of 1 crore in case of death of any student.
