3 members of a family commit suicide over the fear of Virus

  • | Saturday | 15th May, 2021

This is the fifth such incident in the state this year after the second wave of Covid started. Last year, nearly 40 suicides related to Covid-19 depression were reported from across the state.

Depressed after one of them was infected with Covid-19, three members of a family committed suicide by consuming some harmful chemical and jumping into a well near a temple, at Nallabelli village under Vepada mandal in Vizianagaram district.

Police recovered their bodies from the well on Friday afternoon. The deceased were identified as U Satyanarayana Gupta (62), his wife Satyavathi (57) and his mother-in-law Ch Venkata Subba Lakshmi (80). The family migrated to Chodavaram town in Vizag district in search of livelihood about a decade ago, where they had been staying since but had gone back to their native Nallabelli on Friday morning, where they ended their lives.

Vallampudi police station sub-inspector Lova Raju said Satyanarayana had tested positive for Covid-19 a few days ago. However, his wife and mother-in-law tested negative. Satyanarayana is survived by a son and daughter. His son works in Nizamabad. “We haven’t found any personal reasons or financial constraints for the extreme step. We suspect they became depressed after one of them tested positive, which led to the mass suicide,” Lova Raju said.

There were rumors that locals did not allow the family to enter their native village fearing the spread of the virus which led them to take the extreme step. However, the police have dismissed this angle. The bodies have been shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem. This is the fifth such incident in the state this year after the second wave of Covid started. Last year, nearly 40 suicides related to Covid-19 depression were reported from across the state.
