Aligarh village panchayat tries to 'hush up' minor's gangrape, father lodges complaint

AGRA: The father of a gangrape victim has defied a village panchayat in the Aligarh district by lodging a complaint against the accused. "If any such thing happened and is revealed in investigations, strict action will be taken against them too," he added. They wanted him to bury the issue and offered "compensation" money.The father, however, refused to accept their proposal and filed a complaint against the accused on Saturday. Pandey said the victim's family had also accused two local girls of allegedly helping the men and thus cases have been registered against them also.However, he was "not aware" about the local panchayat trying to hush up the case by offering money to the girl's family. They allegedly took her to a secluded spot and raped her.The girl's father claimed that after he had informed the villagers about the incident and sought their help to get the suspects booked, the local panchayat held a meeting and pressured him not to file any police complaint.

The case was registered against them as the victim's father refused to bow to its pressure to allegedly "strike a deal".The panchayat of Fatehgadhi East village tried to "force" the family of the girl, who was allegedly gang-raped by four men last Tuesday, to strike a deal with the accused.According to the police, the girl, who belongs to a particular community, was accosted on the fateful day by the four men, while she was going to her fields to pluck vegetables. They allegedly took her to a secluded spot and raped her.The girl's father claimed that after he had informed the villagers about the incident and sought their help to get the suspects booked, the local panchayat held a meeting and pressured him not to file any police complaint. They wanted him to bury the issue and offered "compensation" money.The father, however, refused to accept their proposal and filed a complaint against the accused on Saturday. In his complaint, he stated that his daughter had gone to the fields with one of her neighbours around 12pm on January 2 when two men from the same village, Sonu and Dasi , forcibly dragged her away and sexually assaulted her. Two of their associates also joined the suspects and allegedly raped the girl.Talking to TOI, senior superintendent of police ( SSP ) Rajesh Pandey said that cases under Section 376 D (gang-rape) of the IPC have been registered against the six suspects and two of them have been identified as Sonu and Dasi. Pandey said the victim's family had also accused two local girls of allegedly helping the men and thus cases have been registered against them also.However, he was "not aware" about the local panchayat trying to hush up the case by offering money to the girl's family. "If any such thing happened and is revealed in investigations, strict action will be taken against them too," he added.
