Ex-minister booked under SC/ST Act files papers for council polls

The polls are scheduled to be held on April 26. Two seats are vacant.

Agra: Senior BJP leader and UP’s former minister Jaiveer Singh, who was recently booked under SC/ST Act for allegedly using abusive language and casteist slurs against a panchayat member in Aligarh, on Monday filed his nomination papers for the upcoming legislative council elections in the state. The polls are scheduled to be held on April 26. Monday was the last day for filing of nomination.BJP has fielded four turncoats — Jaiveer Singh, Yashwant Singh, Sarojini Agarwal and Bukkal Nawab, who had defected from SP — for the council polls . Yashwant Singh had vacated the seat in August last year to make way for CM Yogi Adityanath while Jaiveer Singh had given up his seat for minority affairs minister Mohsin Raza, who has been nominated again.Jaiveer Singh was a minister in the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party government in 2007-2012. He quit the party in July last year and joined BJP after resigning from his legislative council seat. Singh had represented the Barauli assembly constituency in Aligarh district in 2002 and 2007.Meanwhile, Aligarh SSP Rajesh Pandey said investigations are underway in the case filed by a panchayat member, Durgesh Devi, against 19 people including Jaiveer Singh and his nephew, Upendra Singh, who is the district panchayat chief.The notification for the legislative council polls was issued on April 9. The scrutiny of nominations will be done on April 17, while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 19.Exuding confidence, BJP state spokesperson Chandramohan said the party is expecting to win 11 of the 13 legislative council seats that are going to the polls on April 26.In the 100-member Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, BJP has only 13 seats while SP has 61, BSP nine, Congress two, RLD has one and others 12. Two seats are vacant.
