No new books for UP secondary schools, 20 days into new session

Agra: Nearly three weeks into the new academic session, which started from April 2, new books for schools of the Uttar Pradesh secondary education department are still not available. For class 11 and 12, major changes were made in the books of History, Geography, Sociology, Economics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. District inspector of schools (DIOS) Vinod Kumar Rai said, “We are working to ensure availability of the new books. In the books of class 9 and 10, Science, Mathematics and Social Science saw the most revision.

Agra: Nearly three weeks into the new academic session, which started from April 2, new books for schools of the Uttar Pradesh secondary education department are still not available. The department switched to NCERT this year and several changes were introduced in the books from class 9 to 12.Teachers and students, who have been making rounds of markets, said except for one or two subjects, books for most were not available anywhere. District inspector of schools (DIOS) Vinod Kumar Rai said, “We are working to ensure availability of the new books. Authorized publishers have been informed and the problem will be sorted by the end of this month.According to teachers and education officials, the publishers tasked with printing the new books were to be blamed for the situation. The contract of printing books for 31 books of 18 subjects had been entrusted to 12 publishers. According to sources, some of the books, published by unauthorized publishers, were available in the market.A senior teacher at a government aided secondary school, who did not wish to be named, said, “Books of publishers authorized by the board are not available in the market. Some of the students have bought books of different publishers, which claim to have followed the revised curriculum. Studies have taken a hit due to this confusion.”Bhojkumar Sharma, district president of State Senior Secondary Teachers’ Association said, “Board officials didn’t made adequate arrangements for the supply of new books.”According to secondary department officials, in first phase of implementation of the NCERT curriculum, changes have been made in books of 18 subjects from class 9 to 12. In the books of class 9 and 10, Science, Mathematics and Social Science saw the most revision. For class 11 and 12, major changes were made in the books of History, Geography, Sociology, Economics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
