Recruitment scam: STF arrests 16 govt staff, including 13 teachers

More arrests are in the offing, officials indicated.According to police, forged qualification documents were used for recruiting teachers. According to available records, 108 teachers out of 290, were recruited in Mathura district on the basis of forged documents. Agra: In a major operation, UP police’s Special Task Force (STF) on Tuesday arrested 16 government employees, including 13 teachers and three basic shiksha adhikari (BSA) employees, in Mathura, for their alleged involvement in a multi-crore recruitment scam of teachers that took place in 2014-15. The other two BSA employees who were arrested are from the computer department.Of the 13 arrested teachers, nine were recruited just six months ago on the basis of their forged documents. More than 29,000 teachers were recruited then.

Agra: In a major operation, UP police’s Special Task Force (STF) on Tuesday arrested 16 government employees, including 13 teachers and three basic shiksha adhikari (BSA) employees, in Mathura, for their alleged involvement in a multi-crore recruitment scam of teachers that took place in 2014-15. More than 29,000 teachers were recruited then. More arrests are in the offing, officials indicated.According to police, forged qualification documents were used for recruiting teachers. The racket had been going out for quite some time and the suspects, all employees of the BSA office, used to charge a hefty sum, running into several lakhs of rupees, for their services.The mastermind of the scam who is behind making the forged papers, Mahesh Sharma, is a clerk at the BSA department. He was also among those arrested. The other two BSA employees who were arrested are from the computer department.Of the 13 arrested teachers, nine were recruited just six months ago on the basis of their forged documents. The remaining four were said to be acting as touts for the main scamsters.Talking with TOI, superintendent of police STF, Agra-Meerut region, Alok Priyadarshi said the suspects used to charge Rs 15 lakh per candidate for their services. According to available records, 108 teachers out of 290, were recruited in Mathura district on the basis of forged documents. He said these teachers were recruited in 2015-16 but they joined duty just six months ago.Priyadarshi said teachers’ recruitment is a multi-crore scam and what has been revealed is just the tip of the iceberg. He told TOI that 29,000 teachers were recruited in 2015-16.The SP said a case has been registered under IPC section 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document) and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act against 16 people.
