17th couple suicide in 15 months Duo found hanging from tree in Agra village

Agra: A young couple killed themselves by hanging from a tree in a suspected suicide pact at the remote Nagla Neem village of Agra district on Thursday. This is the 17th such case in Agra zone in the past 15 months.The deceased were residents of Mathura district. On January 11, a couple committed suicide by jumping in front of train at Kosi Kalan railway station. On June 7, two class-X students, Bablu and Poonam, were found hanging in Transport Nagar, Agra.On May 31, Devender Kumar (23) and Krishna Kumar (20) had committed suicide by hanging themselves from a tree in Gopalpur village of Etah. They were identified as Golukesh, 23, of Ading village under Goverdhan police jurisdiction, and Babita, 22, of Nagla Bhujurg village under Baldeo police jurisdiction.

Agra: A young couple killed themselves by hanging from a tree in a suspected suicide pact at the remote Nagla Neem village of Agra district on Thursday. The bodies of the duo, who were also distant relatives, were spotted by villagers. Police sources have not ruled out honour killing in the incident. This is the 17th such case in Agra zone in the past 15 months.The deceased were residents of Mathura district. They were identified as Golukesh, 23, of Ading village under Goverdhan police jurisdiction, and Babita, 22, of Nagla Bhujurg village under Baldeo police jurisdiction. According to police, Babita, who was married to another man, was Golukesh’s aunt.Akhilesh Narayan Singh, additional superintendent of police (ASP) (rural), Agra west, said, “The two were allegedly in a relationship but their families were against it. They had left home around 2 am on Wednesday. Golukesh and Babita allegedly went on a motorbike from Mathura to Agra and took the extreme step.”Their bodies were found hanging with two different dupattas while their feet touched the ground. The motorbike was found around 200 metre away from the suicide spot. “Why would they travel 60 km on a bike in the dead of night to hang themselves. We have also not recovered any suicide note,” said a policeman, who did not wish to be named.“The bodies have been sent for autopsy. We will file an FIR once the report comes. No one from the victims’ side has approached us with a complaint,” said ASP Singh.Police sources also said that Agra zone has reported at least one couple suicide every month in the past one year.Earlier, on June 28, a couple had hanged themselves in Nauri village of Kasganj district. On May 11, another couple hanged themselves in Mahrauli village of Mathura. On May 2, bodies of a young couple, who shot themselves, were found lying in a vacant house in Mathura. On March 30, a couple had jumped to their deaths before a speeding train in Mathura, close to Highway police station.On January 15, a couple hailing from Lalitpur district committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. The girl, all of 19-year-old, was pursuing BSc while the 26-year-old boy was a taxi driver. They were neighbours and had known each other for some time. On January 11, a couple committed suicide by jumping in front of train at Kosi Kalan railway station. Only two days ago, on January 9, another couple had killed themselves the same way in Mathura. Their bodies were recovered from a track near Farah railway station.On October 17 last year, a teenaged couple, Lokesh (19) and Babli (18), residents of Mathura, committed suicide by hanging themselves from a tree in Atush village, which is close to Mathura-Agra border. Police records further reveal that on July 23, 2017, Yogesh Kumar Yadav (20) and Manisha Yadav (18), allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in Bachhmai area of Mathura. On July 11 that year, Vikram Yadav (22) and Ruby Yadav (21) of Sirauliya village, Firozabad jumped in front of a train. Five days before that, on July 6, a school-going couple, Bhanu Pratap (17) and Kumari Sunehari (16) of Snauthi village, allegedly committed suicide in the same way in a remote area of Kasganj district. On June 7, two class-X students, Bablu and Poonam, were found hanging in Transport Nagar, Agra.On May 31, Devender Kumar (23) and Krishna Kumar (20) had committed suicide by hanging themselves from a tree in Gopalpur village of Etah. On May 28 again, Tanu Jat, a student of class X and Gautam Singh Baghel, a class XII student hanged themselves from a tree in Biharipur village of Etmadpur in Agra.On May 15, Bhanu Singh (20) and Pushpa (19) from Breheru village jumped in front of a train in Agra after parents of both victims had opposed their relationship.
