Neeraj sought Euthanasia just a week before his death

AGRA: Doyen of Hindi poetry, Padma Bhushan awardee Gopal Das Neeraj, who died on Thursday, had sought permission for “euthanasia” just a week before his death, indicating that the legend was quite sick of his ailing life.“My body has become a burden on me and I want to free from it”, wrote Neeraj, in his letter to the DM, Aligrah, seeking “helideath” injection to end his life. However, the letter reached the DM office a day before his death on Wednesday.In his letter to the DM, Neeraj had referred to the recent decision of the Supreme Court, legalizing passive euthanasia DM CB Singh confirming having received the letter on July 16 and said he had immediately directed the CMO to appoint a doctor to visit Neeraj’s home regularly. Unfortunately, he died the next day, on July 17.Neeraj had been suffering from many old age related ailments for the past few years and was shifted from Agra to the Pulmonary Department of AIIMS on Wednesday after he developed respiratory complications, a family member said.The state government has announced that the last rites of the poet will be held with full state honour.DM CB Singh said that all arrangements have been made at Numaish ground in Aligarh for public homage.
