Inmates escape from custody as cops watch video on phone

Agra: Two inmates of Fatehgarh district jail who have 28 cases of loot and dacoity against them fled from police custody while returning from Bulandshahr district court after a hearing. The incident took place on Tuesday around 8.15 pm near Sasota village in Etah district.Identified as Rupendar Singh and Ajay Chauhan, both residents of Bulandshahr, the two have 15 and 13 criminal cases registered against them.According to police, on Tuesday morning, three constables, identified as Krishna Kumar, Rajeev Kumar and Sudhir Kumar, along with driver Kunwar Lal Pal, left with the two inmates for Bulandshahr district court in an SUV.“While returning, the duo managed to jump out of the car while the constables were busy watching a video on their smartphone,” said an official. He added, “Since the road near Sasota village had large potholes, the driver slowed down. The two inmates first cut the rope from which their hands were tied and then jumped out of the vehicle. They ran towards a nearby field and disappeared.”The constables contacted the local police at Aliganj for support, but together, they could not find the two undertrials.Fatehgarh SP Santosh Kumar Mishra said, “The three constables have been suspended. Police teams have been conducting raids to nab the duo. A departmental inquiry is underway after which we will know whether it was an act of negligence or the inmates were set free on purpose.”
