Agra: Uttar Pradesh governor Ram Naik who is also the chancellor of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University will unveil a 12-feet-tall gun-metal alloy statue of philosopher and politician Pt Deendayal Upadhyay at the varsity’s Paliwal Park campus on September 25. According to university officials, this would be for the first time that varsity chancellor will unveil a statue of a former student on campus.On Friday, university’s VC Arvind Kumar Dixit did an inspection to check arrangements for establishing the statue. He directed officials to make arrangements for the ceremony.Dixit said, “Pt Deendayal Upadhyay dedicated his entire life for the betterment of society. Apart from being a philosopher and a politician, he was a social reformer who worked for the upliftment of the downtrodden. Agra university is proud to have had him as an alumnus. As a mark of respect, we are going to establish a mega statue of the leader. It will inspire young students to work with a larger vision of bringing a positive change in the society and work for the progress of nation. The statue will be unveiled by the chancellor on September 25.”University PRO GS Sharma, said, “The chancellor will come to the main campus for the first time. He had chaired convocation ceremonies which are conducted at the Khandari campus. Earlier Paliwal campus used to be the venue for convocation ceremony. After a long time a major event is going to take place at the main campus. For this special arrangements are being made.”He said, “Pt Deendayal Upadhyay was a meritorious student of Agra university. He joined the St. John’s College in 1940s to pursue a master’s degree in English literature and received a gold medal. Later, he cleared the Provincial Services Exam but declined to join the service to work for social and political reformation.”
