Plea for safety audit of highways to reduce accidents

The demands include safety audit of all the national and state highways and expressways, installation of CCTV cameras on highways, insurance cover on all tolled roads, increased compensation for hit and run deaths and lower toll for highways not completely developed.ADF secretary K C Jain said, “We have requested PM to order a mandatory safety audit of all highways, expressways and state highways after fixed time period. Agra: On eve of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, citizen rights organization, Agra Development Foundation (ADF), sent a letter to the PM listing a nine-point charter of demands to reduce road accidents. The national highways are unsafe. On basis of the audit report, required repairs and maintenance work should be done in a time- bound manner.”The ADF letter said 4.94 lakh people were injured in road accidents on national highways in 2016. As compared to length of the highways and number of vehicles, there is huge shortage of human resource for traffic management.

Besides, 1,50,785 people lost their life. The national highways are unsafe. CCTV cameras should be installed for proper traffic management on the highways.The Yamuna expressway has also proved to be dangerous. Here, 4,956 accidents have taken place between August 212 and March 2018. In this, 718 people have lost their life and 7,671 have been injured.Similarly, 100 people have died in 853 accidents on Agra-Lucknow expressway from August 2017 to March 2018. Speed control rules are required to be strictly enforced on the expressways to curb accidents.ADF secretary said, “The number of vehicles on highway are increasing and new stretches are being developed. As compared to length of the highways and number of vehicles, there is huge shortage of human resource for traffic management. Traffic employees are required to be appointed as per the standard norms to stop accidents.”ADF has also requested that agencies concerned with the construction and maintenance of the highways, expressways and state highways should maintain record of accidents on their website.
