Agra: A day after BJP’s Aligarh MP Satish Gautam alleged that AMU was being run with a “Taliban mentality”, the university students’ union secretary urged President Ramnath Kovind to revoke the former’s membership from the varsity’s court, its supreme governing body, for his “irresponsible” statement.In a letter to the President, AMUSU secretary Huzaifa Amir said that the MP, who is also the member of the AMU court, has been continuously issuing “baseless and senseless statements” against the university.Amir told TOI that Gautam was always trying to defame the university. “This is a university and not a political field. The MP wants cheap publicity and targets the university of national importance to gain political mileage,” he added.He said, “Instead of talking about the university’s development and raising funds for it, Gautam was engaged only in defaming it.”“Gautam is targeting the university just to gain political mileage by instigating the sentiments. His actions and statements are having the potential to breach peace and order at AMU because it is hurting the sentiments of the varsity’s fraternity spread across the globe,” he wrote in the letter to Kovind.In a letter to the VC on Monday, Gautam had alleged that when a research-scholar-turned-terrorist was killed by security forces in Jammu, AMU students “mourned his death”. “These kinds of incidents show that they don’t want to go forward with the nation,” the BJP lawmaker said.
