Over 4000 vehicle owners issued notices for not having fitness certificates

AGRA: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has issued notices to over 4600 four-wheeler owners for not having fitness certificates of their vehicles. Till last month, RTO issued notices to 67,000 people whose vehicles were 15 years old or more. Fitness certificates are issued on the basis of a vehicle’s age, amount of pollutants emitted by it and its condition, in order to ensure it doesn’t cause pollution or accidents.RTO (administration) DK Singh said, “So far, notices have been issued to owners of 4675 diesel-operated eight-seater vehicles for not having fitness certificates. Apart from four-wheelers, notices were issued to owners of scooters, bikes and three wheelers. Vehicles that are more than 15 years old will not be issued a fitness certificate and hence, has to be taken off the road.

RTO officials said that that the move aims to put a tab on vehicular pollution in the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ). Fitness certificates are issued on the basis of a vehicle’s age, amount of pollutants emitted by it and its condition, in order to ensure it doesn’t cause pollution or accidents.RTO (administration) DK Singh said, “So far, notices have been issued to owners of 4675 diesel-operated eight-seater vehicles for not having fitness certificates. Their registration will be cancelled if they fail to get a fitness test conducted within this month.”RTO has started working on its target of reducing pollution caused by vehicles in the TTZ. Vehicles that are more than 15 years old will not be issued a fitness certificate and hence, has to be taken off the road. The department is also focusing on pollution caused by commercial vehicles. Till last month, RTO issued notices to 67,000 people whose vehicles were 15 years old or more. Apart from four-wheelers, notices were issued to owners of scooters, bikes and three wheelers. Now, the department has issued notices to 4675 eight-seaters, including Chevrolet Tavera, Toyota Innova Mahindra Bolero , Maruti Van etc.RTO (enforcement) Anil Kumar said, “As per norms, owners have to pay a penalty of Rs 50 every day since the expiry of their vehicles’ fitness certificate. In several cases, we have recovered up to Rs 30,000 penalty from vehicles found to be without the certificate. Under revised rules, vehicles with a seating capacity of eight people or above need to get fitness certificates renewed every year.”Till November end, the regional transport department has seized 152 unauthorized vehicles. Parts of all of these were sold out on Monday.Giving details about action on 15-year-old vehicles, RTO officials said that if such a vehicle is registered in Agra, the owner will be slapped with a penalty and it will not be released without a court order.
