Agra: A slaughterhouse and a beer-brewing plant in Aligarh were on Friday sealed as the administration upped the ante against polluting factories in the region against the backdrop of upcoming Kumbh Mela. “They have been fined Rs 2 lakh as they continued production for four several days even after instructions,” said the regional officer. This prompted the authorities to come up with such a stringent order,” the DM said.“They will be shut until the water treatment plant is made fully functional,” said the DM.The Kumbh fair is all set to start from January 15, and it will continue till March 4. According to UP pollution control board, the effluent treatment plants of the factories were not functioning and the units were discharging a large amount of pollutants into river.Aligarh district magistrate (DM) CB Singh said that both the plants-- Hind Agro Industries Ltd and Wave Distilleries & Breweries Ltd -- were sealed as they were polluting water.Singh said that both the factories were inspected by the pollution board and they were served notices to rectify the fault in their treatment plant.“But, they paid no heed to the notices. The BJP-led Central government had promised a clean Ganga, and it is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that its water is clean when crores of devotees take a plunge into it during the Kumbh in Prayagraj.Giving details about the sealed factories in Aligarh, regional officer of pollution control board, Ram Gopal said that effluent samples collected from the slaughterhouse did not meet the set standards.“Owner of the slaughterhouse was advised to install tertiary treatment plant (for a final cleaning process that improves waste water quality before it is reused, recycled or discharged to the environment), but he failed to do so,” the officer said.A fine of Rs 50,000 was also imposed on them to compensate for the loss to the environment, he said. The brewery unit’s treatment plant was non-functional at the time of inspection on January 5, Gopal said.
