Agra: Police have arrested seven persons for allegedly slaughtering goats at a private barn in Mohalla Tilla Nadram under Mantola police jurisdiction on Tuesday night.The accused were identified as Sagir, Mohammad Sadiq, Mohammad Chand Qureshi, Imran, Raja Ali, Babu and Bantu. Sources said that police have registered a case against them under various provisions of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, Food Safety and Standards Act, Arms Act, Environment Conservation Act and the relevant sections of IPC. They added that the livestock was being slaughtered for a wedding. Police also recovered three slaughtered goats, one slaughtered lamb and three knives from the barn.Additional district magistrate K P Singh said, “The action was taken after a Delhi-based woman journalist tweeted pictures showing animal waste and blood in the drains. The accused hail from a poor family and have no means to open a slaughterhouse. Probably that’s why they were using a private barn to slaughter animals.”AMC chief veterinary officer Yogesh Sharma said, “There is only one government slaughterhouse in the district at present. Hence, poor butchers are forced to operate in their private concealed barns.
