Urs marking Shah Jahanrsquos death anniversary to start on April 2

AGRA: The 364th three-day annual Urs of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, to commemorate his death anniversary, will begin here at Taj on April 2. Its length increased to 870 meters in 2016.Meanwhile, superintending archeologist (Agra circle) of Archeological Survey of India (ASI), Vasant Swarankar issued a notice on the free entry to the Taj Mahal during Urs. In 2015, the chadar was 810 metere long. Entry into the Taj Mahal will be free from 2 pm onwards on the first two days of Urs and on the last day, it will be free the whole day.According to a member of the organising committee, a 1,221 metre long ceremonial “chadar” will be offered at the mausoleum at 3 pm on April 4.

Every year, Khuddam-e-roza (traditional caretakers of the Taj) committee, offers a very long multi-coloured “chadar”, representing different faiths of the country, on the grave of the Mughal emperor during Urs.Tahiruddin Tahir, a committee member said, “The unique thing about this chadar is that it is made by stitching together cloth pieces presented to the committee by people of different faiths, who believe doing it will fulfill their wishes.”Last year, a chadar measuring 1,111 metre was offered on April 15, the last day of the Urs event. In 2015, the chadar was 810 metere long.
