AMU students extend support to BSP

BSP has given 97 tickets to Muslims which shows her sincerity to "our" community, he said. AGRA: In a setback to the SP-Congress alliance in UP Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students have announced support to Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj party (BSP) and appealed to all Muslims to defeat the alliance and the BJP.Talking to TOI, AMU Student Union president, Faizul Hassan dubbed the decision as a major political shift. Hassan said Congress has no existence in Uttar Pradesh.He said the party's role in the Babri Masjid demolition is known to everyone. "UP Muslims are not accepting the alliance of Congress (Babri accused) and SP (Dadri accused)," he said.He said the Muslim community's support to Mayawati is based on the promise that Muslims will be protected and supported under the BSP rule. He referred to incidents like the Muzaffarnagar riots, the Dadri lynching and lathi charge on AMU students during peaceful protests for disappearance of Najeeb in this context.He said the students' community feels that the alliance with the Congress party will not prove to be beneficial for the SP.

He said the decision was influenced by several factors including failure of the SP government to fulfil its 2012 poll promises to the community.He said the SP had promised in their manifesto that 18% reservation would be made for Muslim, which wasn't done. Similarly, their promise of releasing innocent muslims languishing in jails due to false terror cases was not fulfilled, he said.He said moreover, Muslims in Uttar Pradesh have been feeling let down due the way the government has functioned in the last five years. He referred to incidents like the Muzaffarnagar riots, the Dadri lynching and lathi charge on AMU students during peaceful protests for disappearance of Najeeb in this context.He said the students' community feels that the alliance with the Congress party will not prove to be beneficial for the SP.
