AMUSU opposes Fatah visit to Aligarh for seminar

Agra: Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union (AMUSU) has opposed the visit of controversial Canada-based journalist Tarek Fatah in Aligarh on June 11 to attend the ‘World Peace and Islam’ seminar in DS College.AMUSU president Faizul Hasan has approached the administration demanding cancellation of permission accorded to the organisers for holding the programme with Fatah as a speaker. His critics on social have allegedly threatened him over his views related to polygamy, child marriage, Sharia laws and triple talaq. “Nobody should oppose fatah’s visit. Agra: Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union (AMUSU) has opposed the visit of controversial Canada-based journalist Tarek Fatah in Aligarh on June 11 to attend the ‘World Peace and Islam’ seminar in DS College.AMUSU president Faizul Hasan has approached the administration demanding cancellation of permission accorded to the organisers for holding the programme with Fatah as a speaker. Hassan said the presence of Fatah in Aligarh, which is a highly sensitive city, would hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community and could vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in the holy month of Ramzan.In his representation to the DM, Hasan stated that the "so-called Islamic preacher” Fatah was famous for his controversial remarks on Islamic preaching and is thus disliked by the majority of Muslims.RTI activist and president of NGO Ahuti, Ashok Chaudhary, who has invited Fatah, said that he has confirmed the journalist’s participation at the June 11 event. “Nobody should oppose fatah’s visit. He has his own views and the right to oppose them.”Fatah was recently allegedly manhandled by Islamic extremists at an Urdu Literature Festival organised at Delhi's Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in February.
