Seven mobile phones seized in Central Jail

Tribune News ServiceAmritsar May 9On the day when Jails Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa visited the Amritsar Central Jail to supervise the arrangements made in view of the rising cases of Covid-19 the jail authorities confiscated as many as seven mobile phones and 10 packs of cigarettes here on Saturday. Of the seven mobile phones recovered six were found hidden in the bathroom of a cell and one was found from a prisoner identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi. Four of them belonged to four gangsters lodged in the jail complex. They were Gurjant Singh alias Bhollu Manoj Kumar Vikramjit alias Vicky aka World and Pankaj Kumar aka Panku. The police said further investigation was under way to ascertain how the prohibited material was sneaked inside the jail complex.

Of the seven mobile phones recovered six were found hidden in the bathroom of a cell and one was found from a prisoner identified as Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi. Four of them belonged to four gangsters lodged in the jail complex. They were Gurjant Singh alias Bhollu Manoj Kumar Vikramjit alias Vicky aka World and Pankaj Kumar aka Panku. A cell phone was confiscated from a prisoner identified as Balraj Singh. Following a complaint lodged by the jail authorities the police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Prisons Act against them. Bhagwant Singh Assistant Superintendent of the Central Jail told the police that during the search operation in Cell No.3 of isolation barrack a mobile was found from Gurpreet Gopi and six others were found from the bathroom. Later Gurpreets interrogation revealed that the six mobiles belonged to other inmates and they were also named in the FIR. Meanwhile a taped packet containing 10 packs of cigarettes was recovered in the complex between Tower Nos.3 and 4. The packet was apparently thrown from outside by an unidentified person. The police have registered a separate FIR in this regard. The police said further investigation was under way to ascertain how the prohibited material was sneaked inside the jail complex.
