SULTANPUR LODHI: A Punjabi TV news channels journalist, who alleged that he and his cameraman were assaulted by police when they were covering the clash between police and Nihangs at Gurdwara Akal Bunga on Thursday morning, has suffered hearing loss with damage to the ear-drum membrane on the left side.His cameraman too underwent a surgery to repair the fractures in the fingers of his one hand.Both are admitted in civil hospital, Sultanpur Lodhi. "I was assaulted with lathis, police personnel slapped me and one hit me with a knee. I could immediately realise the damage to my ear even as I got bruises at other places with lathis. The hearing loss has increased now," said journalistCharanjeet Singh, who was the first one to rush to the place along with cameraman Balwinder Singh in the wee hours and broke the story about the bloody clash between the cops and Nihangs. "We reached there at 5am and firing was on at that time," he said. The medico legal report given by the civil hospital mentions reddish-brown bruise marks on his left thigh, left shoulder and right forearm. "We recorded the firing by police as part of our job, but a policeman used a rod to hit the cameraman and cops also snatched his mobile phone, which had a recording of the police action. The mobile phone has still not been returned," he said, adding that police personnel used a metallic lathi to hit the cameraman.Cameraman Balwinder Singh suffered a fracture each on two fingers of his right hand. He was operated upon by doctors on Saturday too. Kapurthala SSP Vatsla Gupta and Sultanpur Lodhi DSP Babandeep Singh were not available for comment as they did not take phone calls.
