DRI busts major gold and currency smuggling racket in Amritsar

AMRITSAR: In a significant operation targeting currency and gold smugglers, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized Euros, US dollars, and pure gold totaling approximately Rs 3.5 crore at Amritsars Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport.On November 22, DRI officials apprehended two Dubai-bound passengers and their two accomplices at the airport, recovering US$ 1.3 lakh and 60,000 Euros hidden in the concealed layers of their baggage.The four individuals were subsequently arrested by the DRI.In another case, the DRI seized 4 kg of gold paste from a passenger arriving in Amritsar from Dubai. Upon extraction, a total of 3 kg of 24-karat gold was recovered, valued at around 1.87 crore.Sources revealed that Amritsar was becoming a hub for currency and gold smugglers, with individuals from other states operating from the city. The DRI has initiated investigations into the cases, suspecting the involvement of hawala transactions, particularly in the currency smuggling incident involving individuals from Delhi.
