Over 70 students of Sangrur Meritorious School hospitalized due to food poisoning

PATIALA: Over 70 students from a meritorious school in Sangrur district of Punjab were admitted to the hospital due to food poisoning. The district administration has initiated a thorough investigation, forming a four-member team to submit a report within a week. The police have booked the contractor and mess manager under attempt to murder charges.Both accused have been arrested, and the vendors contract has been terminated.Sangrur deputy commissioner Jatinder Jorwal assured that the situation is under control, with the arrested individuals facing legal consequences. The students had reportedly complained about worms in their meals for days, leading to deteriorating food quality. Health authorities revealed that 18 students were initially hospitalized, with 14 discharged and four under observation. On a subsequent day, 36 more students were admitted, and 39 are currently under observation. Additionally, around 20 students were admitted to PGI Ghabdan, with stable health.The four-member investigative team, led by Sangrur sub-divisional magistrate Charanjot Singh, includes the tehsildar, district education officer (secondary), and senior medical officer. They have been tasked with providing a comprehensive report within a week. Following the Sangrur incident, food sampling in the nine other meritorious schools across Punjab has been ordered.Education minister Harjot Singh Bains assured that the students are stable, emphasizing a thorough inquiry and stringent action against those responsible. The minister has requested a detailed report within 24 hours. This incident highlights the need for stringent measures to ensure the safety of school meals, prompting a broader review of food services in similar institutions.
