AMRITSAR: A dispute has emerged regarding the elections of the 121-year-old Sikh organization Chief Khalsa Diwan (CKD), with a group of its members writing a letter to the president, urging the prompt conduct of elections. The concerned members, including Amarjit Singh Bhatia, claimed that the term of the CKDs General House concluded on December 2, and despite this, the current management is allegedly hesitant to organize elections.Bhatia, expelled from the CKD General House last year, stated that although the last elections were initially scheduled for December 2, 2018, legal issues led to their postponement to February 17, 2018.However, he emphasized that the term of the General House had officially expired on December 2, warranting immediate elections.CKD holds significant importance as a Sikh educational and socio-religious institution with global recognition for its dedicated humanitarian service. Established in 1902, CKD played a pivotal role in Sikh affairs before the formation of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The organization has a storied history, including its campaign against non-Sikh practices in gurdwaras and its control of the Golden Temple and Akal Takht in 1905.Bhatia and several other members, including Hari Singh, Baljinder Singh, Avtar Singh, Navdeep Singh, and Harkanwal Singh Kohli, were reportedly expelled from CKD on various charges.Responding to the concerns, CKD President Inderbir Singh Nijjar, a former cabinet minister, mentioned that the last elections were held on January 17. He assured that the process for the upcoming elections would commence accordingly, with a General House meeting scheduled for December 9. However, the expelled members remain apprehensive, expressing concerns about the delay in initiating the election process.
