Rampur: In the fourth death from Chinese manjha in Rampur in the last one year, a 25-year-old youth died after his throat was slit by the glass-coated kite string in Ganj police station area of Rampur city on Sunday evening. Also in October last year, two bike-borne youths, who were not identified, died from Chinese manjha on Ram-Rahim flyover here. In October 2017, a seven-year-old boy, Arman, died after his kite string hit a transformer and got electrocuted. Anas Shamsi, a youth who was set to tie the knot in October, 2016, died on the spot due to excessive bleeding.

Rampur: In the fourth death from Chinese manjha in Rampur in the last one year, a 25-year-old youth died after his throat was slit by the glass-coated kite string in Ganj police station area of Rampur city on Sunday evening. Rakesh, a resident of a village in Wajidnagar on Nainital Road, was returning home when he got entangled in manjha near Bilaspur locality. An FIR under IPC's section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was lodged against an unidentified person.Rampur superintendent of police Vipin Tada reached the spot and suspended area sub-inspector Santosh Kumar for negligence. On Monday, after the post-mortem report of the youth arrived, his body was cremated in his village. According to officials, the deceased was on a bike with a relative, Veer Singh, when his throat got caught in the manjha.Singh said, “We had just crossed the Bilaspur gate when Rakesh’s throat got caught in the kite string. As he lost control of the bike, we both fell and Rakesh started bleeding. Passer-byes helped me get him to the district hospital but he was declared dead there.”Tada added, “Special police teams have been formed to curb the menace of Chinese manjha in the district and elsewhere. We have carried out raids at various places inside Ganj, Civil Lines and Sadar Kothwali areas to seize Chinese manjha and have also tried to arrest those involved in its trade. During my tenure, three offenders were arrested and charge-sheeted under section 188 of IPC (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).”He also said, “We are trying extract information on other traders of Chinese manjha from those we have in custody. Apart from this, we are also appealing to the general public to report users of Chinese manjha to us.”The Allahabad high court, in November, 2015, had banned the use of Chinese manjha. Two days before that, a woman constable had been severely injured in the neck after she got entangled in Chinese manjha on her way to work.In August 2016, a 23-year-old businessman died after his throat was slit by Chinese manjha on Rahe-Raza Road in the city.
