19 year old woman killed for dowry in Pilibhit

Pilibhit: A 19 year-old newly-wed woman was killed allegedly for dowry by her husband and in-laws in Nazirganj village, police said on Wednesday.The incident occurred on Tuesday and the matter was reported to police on the next day after which an FIR was lodged against three persons. The police have sent the dead body for autopsy.According to one Mohan Kumar, elder brother of the deceased and a resident of Nizampur, his sister Meena Devi married Maiku Lal in March this year.“We gave cash and other valuables to Maiku Lal as a dowry, but he and his family members were not satisfied. Then they started demanding Rs 50,000 more and a motor cycle,” he said.Kumar said Meena was subjected to physical torture many times in want of dowry.“On Tuesday morning, when I visited my sister’s home my brother-in-law thrashed her in my presence, asking for dowry. Somehow, I consoled him and came back home,” he said.Mohan alleged that he got a call from his brother-in-law asking him to come home as his sister was in serious condition.“I, along with my elder brother’s son Arun Kumar, rushed to my sister’s home and found her dead body lying in a court yard. There were prominent bruises on her trachea, which clearly implied that she had been strangled,” he said.SHO Sehramau (North) police station Raj Kumar Bharadwaj told TOI that they have lodged an FIR against Maiku Lal, his father Raja Ram and mother Sushila Devi under sections 304 B (death of a woman caused by any burns or bodily injury or occurs otherwise than under normal circumstances), 498 A (subjecting a woman to cruelty by husband or relatives), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of IPC and sections 3 and 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.Bhaeadwaj said the accused are absconding.
