In rural civic bodies, streetlights to be replaced with LEDs

Bareilly: In a bid to conserve power and lower electricity bills in rural areas, all rural civic bodies have been instructed by the state government to replace streetlights in their respective areas with LED lights.District panchayati raj officer (DPRO) BK Singh said that a six-member committee presided by the district magistrate will be constituted to purchase LED lights. After the replacement, we would be able to save around 40% of electricity bills,” the DPRO said.According to the DPRO, the large-scale replacement exercise would see around 40,000 streetlights getting LEDs.According to the officer, since the cash-starved rural civic bodies pay lakhs of rupees to electricity department, the replacement project would also improve their financial conditions. “We have been asked to conduct a survey to send a proposal for LED lights required for the district,” the DPRO, who is also the nodal officer of the project, said.Additional chief secretary in UP government, Rajendra Kumar Tiwari, has directed the district magistrates across the state to send proposals for LED lights after conducting a survey of each village panchayat.“Funds released under the 14th finance commission will be utilized to install LED lights by replacing the conventional ones.
