Bareilly: The state government has expressed disappointment over the poor performance of ‘Mukhyamantri Samoohik Vivaah Yojana’ in Bareilly division, where no mass marriages have been organised in Badaun district for the past five months against the target of 1500.This year, only 586 couples were married off in four districts of the division against the given target of 6,000 marriages. Divisional commissioner Ranveer Prasad expressed displeasure while issuing letters to the district magistrates of all the four districts – Bareilly, Badaun, Shahjahanpur and Pilibhit.The district social welfare officer (DSWO) hoped that the scheme would pick up once the ‘auspicious days’ for marriages begin in November, i.e., from Devothani Ekadashi.According to administrative sources, in Badaun not a single couple could get the benefit of the scheme in the current fiscal. The picture of other three districts is also not rosy since only 61 couples got married under the scheme in Bareilly, 174 couples in Pilibhit and 351 couples in Shahjahanpur. Each district is given a target of 1,500 couples getting married under the scheme.Seeing the poor response of the intended beneficiaries under the scheme, the state government has revised the maximum annual family income of the applicants from Rs 46,000 to Rs 2 lakh.The DSWO, Ashok Dikshit, said they are now anticipating more applications as the annual family income of the intended beneficiaries has been increased.“According to the Hindu mythology, until four months period of Chaumasa is not completed, no auspicious work like marriage is performed. This year, Devothani Ekadashi is on November 19, the date from which the marriage season will start. However, till then we can organise mass marriages of those couple who are from other religions, if we receive applications,” he said.
