Five held for brutal killing of tigress in Dudhwa reserve

One of the accused is still on the run.All the accused belong to Chaltua village which is situated inside the core area of Dudhwa tiger reserve. Pilibhit: Over a week after a group of men allegedly ran over an adult tigress with a tractor and also beat it to death with sticks in core area of Dudhwa tiger reserve (DTR), police arrested five of the accused in the case on Tuesday. The injured man had also succumbed to his injuries.On Tuesday, a team of Seramau North police station headed by senior sub inspector Sanjeev Singh nabbed the five accused from the Mailani forest range.Ramesh Pandey, field director of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, said, “Efforts are on to trace the sixth accused. The men had thrashed the tigress on November 4 in retaliation after one of the residents of their village had been attacked by the big cat earlier in the day. We are in constant touch with the superintendent of police and the district magistrate of Pilibhit regarding the case.”Pandey also said that there was information that other villagers were also involved in the killing of the tigress and had attempted to extract its body parts.An FIR has been lodged against six accused and some unidentified men under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to any public servant in the discharge of his duty), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke the breach of peace), 427 (committing mischief and thereby causes loss or damage to the amount of fifty rupees or upwards), 342 (wrongful confinement of any person) of IPC and sections 9, 27, 31, 51 (1) of Wildlife Protection Act.Those arrested were identified as Bablu, Lal Bahadur, Chauthi, Subhash and Om Prakash, while the sixth accused Mukesh is still on the run.
