Tourists’ footfall at Chuka up despite man-tiger conflict

Pilibhit: The footfall of tourists visiting Chuka, an eco-tourism spot in Pilibhit tiger reserve (PTR), has increased considerably in comparison to the last year, sending an encouraging signal to officials promoting it.PTR deputy director Adarsh Kumar said the seven-month-long eco-tourism session for the current year was initiated on November 15. “In the first 30 days, Chuka recorded a total footfall of 1,675 tourists, including six foreigners, which is 456 more than the previous year’s footfall (1,219) during the same period.”“The result is encouraging in the backdrop of killing of 25 humans in man-tiger conflict in and around PTR between October 24, 2016 and September, 2018, and innumerable attacks on villagers and cattle by big cats,” said Kumar.Chuka, built at the shore of Sharda Sagar dam amid dense forest of Sal trees in Mahof forest range, has four Tharu huts, one water hut and a tree huts for the stay of tourists.Chuka was visited by as many as 16,360 tourists on day tour as well as for the night stay in 2016-17, while the footfall in 2017-18 dropped slightly with visitors’ numbers recorded at 14,537, according to PTR official records.
