Bareilly: Chief medical officer of Sambhal Dr Amita Singh, another doctor and two paramedics have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and gross negligence in connection with the death of a woman who died while undergoing a sterilisation surgery at a government hospital here on Friday. The FIR was lodged on the basis of a complaint filed by the deceased’s husband. Police are now probing the matter. However, no one has so far been arrested.When contacted, CMO Dr Singh said this was the first such incident in the district this financial year. The department has successfully carried out as many as 1,310 sterilization surgeries in the district so far.Giving details about this particular case, she said, “A team of surgeons had conducted seven operations on February 15 and this was the eighth one. Everything was going smoothly when the woman had a fit in the middle of the surgery. Our surgeon and anesthesiologist tried their best to revive her but all their efforts were in vain,” Singh added.A sterilisation camp for women was held at Behjoi community health centre (CHC) in Sambhal where Munisha (38), wife of Veer Pal from Swarajpur village, came to undergo sterilization. The woman, a mother of three, did not want any more children. The camp was being held under the supervision of the CMO.Pal claimed that during the surgery, his wife’s condition deteriorated due to negligence on the part of the doctors and they could not control the situation. “My wife succumbed to excessive bleeding in the operation theatre and doctors did nothing to save her. Before we could learn about her death, all the doctors had fled the hospital,” he said.After the incident, hundreds of villagers gathered at the CHC and created a ruckus there. Upon getting information, a heavy force was pressed into the service to bring the situation under control.
