Unable to pay off loans, gram pradhan commits suicide in Badaun

Bareilly: A 40-year-old village head allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in Badaun district on Sunday. “The preliminary investigation has revealed that Yadav committed suicide as he was depressed for not being able to pay loan. “Though Yadav had borrowed money to buy tractors, he had to later take a loan of over Rs 4 lakh to get them repaired. However, two of his tractors broke down due to over-loading and fire while the third one met with an accident. He was depressed as he was unable to repay the huge sum of money,” said Prem Singh, a fellow villager.Another villager added that Yadav, who contested elections for the first time in 2016, had borrowed money for fighting polls.

Kudholi village gram pradhan Bharat Singh Yadav had taken loan worth lakhs from banks and had also borrowed money from other villagers for his daughter’s marriage ceremony and to buy three tractors.According to a police officer, Yadav had left home early morning to relieve himself but later children found his body hanging from a tree in a field. “The preliminary investigation has revealed that Yadav committed suicide as he was depressed for not being able to pay loan. The body has been sent for post-mortem and we are awaiting report,” said Pramod Kumar, station officer of Bisauli police station in Badaun.The deceased had purchased three tractors nearly four years ago after borrowing money from a few villagers. However, two of his tractors broke down due to over-loading and fire while the third one met with an accident. “Though Yadav had borrowed money to buy tractors, he had to later take a loan of over Rs 4 lakh to get them repaired. His financial condition further deteriorated after he took another loan to get his elder daughter married. He was depressed as he was unable to repay the huge sum of money,” said Prem Singh, a fellow villager.Another villager added that Yadav, who contested elections for the first time in 2016, had borrowed money for fighting polls. The village head is survived by his wife and eight children.
